5 Top Tips for Surviving and Succeeding at a 48 Hour Film Challenge – Series Introduction

After seeing DVMISSION regular Tippers Pritchard post a thread on Twitter offering advice on how to succeed at doing a 48 hour film challenge. We asked if he would turn it into a blog post for us and what follows is part 1 of 5 part series that we will be releasing over the coming weeks.

You can follow Tippers’ original Twitter thread HERE!

Don’t forget this year’s challenge is currently open to team registration and you can enter your team by following THIS link to Filmfreeway. Just submit to DVMISSION and name your project as your team name.

Introduction

Back in 2015, I moved to Southsea to carve out a new life. Part of that fresh start was to give acting a go, so I auditioned for a few student films and subsequently landed a few roles. I immediately had the filmmaking bug and so started seeking out more opportunities – entering DVMISSION being one of them. Without really knowing what it was, what to do or how we’d do it, a film student and I signed up. With the instructions for just 2 of us to make a CyberPunk film in 48 hours, we were fairly lost, but went at it and got something made. Roll on a week to the award nights and I don’t mind admitting that I was properly gutted and quite disheartened to walk away empty-handed.

But, I didn’t go away empty-headed. I’d witnessed the possibility of 48 hour filmmaking – that year’s big winner blew my mind. I’d also seen how much fun it could be (looking at you Worcester Massive) and witnessed a community that I desperately wanted to be a part of. In 2017, working with a new crew I went into the competition with an obsession for winning, working hard on the script and story. Such was my drive to win something, I spent the whole time posting on social media so that we could at least have a shot at the new Social Media award – which we did, along with Best Actor and Best Film.

Six years and five more films later my entries have managed to pick up Best Film, Best Actor, Best Sound Design and Best Story awards. After putting together a tweet thread of advice, DVMISSION asked me to expand on it into a blog. So, for those new to DVMISSION or those feeling a bit stuck, here are my top 5 tips for making a winning DVMISSION short film. I’m no expert, just someone with a real passion for it who hopes he can help.
