DVMISSION 48-Hour Film Challenge: 10 Top Tips – #4

You won’t want to miss our weekly 48-hour film challenge tips, leading up to the CHALLENGE WEEKEND.

Top Tip 4: Let there be light

As lighting is the heart of filmmaking, it’s essential to know how to light, but also why.  Even if you’re not the most experienced Director of Photography, you can be sensitive to the aesthetic and feel that you are trying to create. Although lighting should be experimented with, similarly to shots, there is a strong need for technical knowledge and even the science behind types of lighting.

It’s a good idea to remind yourself of different lighting tips and tricks before the CHALLENGE WEEKEND, so here’s a great little video you can refer to as you film:

Below, we have linked a brilliant book which explores technical, aesthetic, and practical aspects of lighting for film and video. It’s a good idea to read this book if you want to delve deeper into the art of lighting and is illustrated to help you see the lighting, which is especially helpful! It breaks down all you need to know (and more!) to be great this CHALLENGE WEEKEND.
